Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) is a rescue pilot with the Indian Air Force. In the line of duty he comes across a stranded Zaara (Preity Zinta) - a girl from Pakistan who has come to India to fulfill her surrogate mothers dying wish. Trivia had approached every music director to score the film, but couldn't find what he thought was the appropriate music for the film. His specific requirement was 'old-world music,' away from Western influences and having a strong melody line, with acoustic instruments. For one life. I didn't expect so much from an unknown director and i was surprised, i love this culture i love the simple people of India and Pakistan which are so well describe, painted in the movie and the beautiful woman of both country.

Kisah cinta yang dilatar belakangi cinta dua negara antara Pakistan dan India, yang meskipun dalam dunia nyata kedua negara ini berseteru, nampaknya tak membuat Yash Chopra mengurungkan niatnya untuk membuat film ini. Dalam Veer Zaara ini mengangkat kisah dua insan berbeda negara yaitu Veer (Shahrukh Khan ) yang merupakan pria India yang akhirnya jatuh cinta kepada Zaara (Preity Zinta ) seorang wanita Pakistan dalam misi penyelamatan para korban kecelakaan bus yang terjun ke jurang. Zaara yang orang Pakistan rela terancam bahaya pergi ke India demi pesan terakhir neneknya.
Dalam pertemuannya tersebut akhirnya keduanya jatuh cinta. Demi bertemu dengan Zaara, Veer akhirnya pergi ke Pakistan, meski pada akhirnya ia harus dipenjara di Pakistan karena dituduh sebagai mata-mata. Dan 20 tahun kemudian seorang pengacara Pakistan (Rani Mukerjee) berkeinginan untuk mengeluarkannya dari penjara.
